ABOVE AND BEYOND is a two-part mini-series inspired by the true story of the Atlantic Ferry Organization, a civilian effort to escort bombers across the frigid waters of the Atlantic Ocean to the United Kingdom's beleaguered Royal Air Force during the gloomiest days of the Second World War. On November 10, 1940, seven aircrafts left an airstrip in the middle of nowhere in the tiny country of Newfoundland for a mission based, for the most part, on faith. In the course of an eleven hour expedition, their crews changed history. By building an air bridge from Canada to Britain, they filled Europe's critical need for aircraft. ABOVE AND BEYOND celebrates the passion, bravery, and persistence of these men and women who turned the tide of the Second World War. The epic historical context of the war also serves as the backdrop for a romantic story of love and belonging at a time when the world was changing. This is part two in the mini-series. After a difficult and turbulent flight, all seven Hudsons manage to land safely in Ireland. Encouraged by success, and ignoring Bennett's appeals for more trained navigators, Lord Beaverbrook demands additional flights as soon as possible. In Gander, Newfoundland, Bill and Shelagh's romance becomes more serious. Nathan pretends to be indifferent. In 1941, Sir Fredrick Banting, the discoverer of insulin, is set to fly to Great Britain on a covert mission with the Ferry Command. Disaster strikes and the plane carrying Dr. Banting crashes, killing him instantly. Blame falls directly on Beaverbrook's mission. Despite mission's astounding success, USA President, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and British Prime Minister, Sir Winston Churchill, decide to turn the Ferry Command from a civilian into a military operation, handing control over to the Royal Air Force. Bennett has a hard time accepting this decision. Shelagh now must choose between Bill and Nathan. <1h 31mn 41s>
