This item is portrait miniature of an officer in the Foot Guards, probably Samuel Proudfoot Hurd. There is other material in the fonds pertaining to Hurd, who was an ancestor of Robert M. Powell. The will of Robert W. Powell (file 2-2), dated 1935, refers to "my two coloured miniatures of my maternal grandparents, Major S. P. Hurd in a Guard's uniform at the date of the Battle of Waterloo (1815), and of Frederica Wynyard". A letter from "Aunt Sophie" to Bob Powell in 1983 (file 1-17) also referred to it: "The Lieut. Hurd miniature is lovely as he is in his full red dress regalia and his wife is in her satin wedding dress". It is possible that there was more than one miniature of Hurd because the miniature donated to Library and Archives Canada is not in good condition, and it has no companion miniature of his wife. According to the Dictionary of Canadian Biography, "Samuel joined the 1st Foot Guards as ensign in March 1814, served in the 1815 campaign against Napoleon, and was awarded the Waterloo medal. He went on half pay in 1817 as captain of the 60th Foot".
