Kalman.Provenance :Nom(s) additionnel(s) :Biographie/Histoire administrative :Kalman, Maxwell M : Born in Montreal in 1906, Maxwell M. Kalman studied architecture at Columbia University and McGill University. He received his degree of Bachlor of Architecture from the latter after a four-summer apprenticeship to the renowned Montreal architectural firm of Ross and MacDonald. Kalman maintained a successful general architectural practice in Montreal from the 1930s until the 1950s. He designed numerous domestic, commercial and public buildings in that city and elsewhere. He was an innovator in apartment design and development and shopping-centre design. His Norgate development at St. Laurent, Quebec, begun in 1948, was a 1300-home low-rental apartment complex and shopping centre; it was C.M.H.C.'s R.I.P. project No. 1 and the first shopping centre in Canada. 'The 4300' in Westmount, Quebec, which he developed in 1959 upon retiring from practice, was the first of the new generation of luxury high-rise apartments in Montreal. He also built the pioneering new town of Lorraine, north of Montreal.
Mr. Kalman moved to Ottawa in 1977 and immediately fell in love with the Parliament Buildings. He constructed a paper model of the East Block, which assisted the reconstruction and renovation of that building by Public Works Canada. He was then asked to reproduce the original Centre Block. His research revealed that the known plans and extant photos of this historic building differ, and led him to write a paper on 'The Unrecorded Changes in the Original Centre Block.' He also produced a model of the Library of Parliament.Information additionnelle :Données mathématiques sur les documents :Various scales.Vedette-matière :Source :PrivéAutre no d'acquisition :945015 CA
