Interview of Robert Tallman, age 82, who was born in England in 1892 and came to Canada circa 1910. He talks about: his childhood; the family’s poverty; working at age 16 as a groom in a stable and later as a professional chauffeur; immigrating to the United States and working in Detroit; going to Windsor to enlist; his military training; going to the U.S. for adventure; more about his piece work in Detroit; the effect on society of the First World War; the decline in church attendance because of the war; women working in munitions factories; deciding to enlist for adventure; and because he was born in England; the soldiers as guinea pigs because they knew nothing about war; war propaganda; how British newspapers created hostility against Germany; no real hostility at the front; German and British soldiers playing football in No Man’s Land; a gratuity paid to war veterans; social life in the 1920s, such as parties and dances; the Depression; postwar adjustment of veterans to civilian life; the formation of the Legion after the First World War; the foundation of the Great War Veterans’ Association (GWVA); his return in 1917; life in Toronto around that time; the decline in Christian morality because of the war; his marriage in 1919; his jobs at Goodyear in Toronto and then at Farmers’ Dairy and Nielsen’s Dairy; better living conditions nowadays than in the years gone by; religion; Christianity; the decline of religious belief in the 1920s because people were focused on having a good time; working conditions at Goodyear; union protection for workers; government pension programs; the pay for soldiers during the First World War; the lack of shrapnel helmets and gas masks before the first attack; the soldiers as "guinea pigs"; comments about the Prince of Wales in 1936; the Salvation Army and its activities during the First World War; the Russian Revolution; and society nowadays.

1. The interviews took place in 1974 and resulted in the publication of a book entitled "The Great War and Canadian Society" edited by Daphne Read - copyright 1978 - New Hogtown Press, Toronto.~2. Release forms, data sheets, and summary analysis/transcripts are available in binders labelled Opportunities for Youth - War and Canadian Society in VSA's audio-visual section.~3. Part of a series of recorded interviews with elderly citizens who lived in Canada during the period of World War I. The interview material consists of their opinions and observations about the war, the war years, and the effect on Canadian society during and after WWI.~4. The interviewee signed an agreement giving consent for a recording of this interview to be placed in the Public Archives of Canada for the purposes of historical research and also signed a publication agreement allowing any transcribed portions of the interview to be used in the book under the condition that no full names, addresses or phone numbers would be published.~5. Subject description is based on information found in the fact sheet, deposit agreement, publication agreement and summary analysis.
