Interview of James Cunningham, age 78, who was born in 1896 in Toronto. His father was born in England and his mother was born in Ireland. For most of his life he worked as a driver for a brewery. He talks about such subjects as: his childhood; his parents and siblings; his job and wages; teaching Sunday school; his trying to enlist three times but being rejected because he had poor ears due to a bout of Scarlet fever when he was young; patriotic parades in Toronto during the First World War; feeling pressure to enlist; childhood games; his mother making him quit a boxing club because of the trouble he had with his ears; stealing an old gum ball machine when he was young and eating gum for weeks; cutting off a friend’s finger by accident when chopping ice; various memories of Toronto neighbourhoods in which he lived; a job delivering liquid air to soda shops and ice cream stores; delivering meat carcasses for Swift’s; his interest in Communism because of “its progressive nature”; attending a Communist Party meeting in Toronto when he was in his late teens; moving to Scarborough; his membership in the Communist Party; speaking at Allan Gardens; being thrown out of Allan Gardens by the police; socialism and communism; fellow Communist Party members he has known, such as Ethel Hill and Bob Hunt; his discussing socialism with his fellow brewery workers; E.P. Taylor; his work at Canadian Breweries; his marriage in 1921; the skating rink on Dovercourt below College Street; getting cow bladders at a slaughterhouse when he was a boy; other recollections of his Toronto neighbourhood; recollections of the Winnipeg General Strike and sympathy felt for it among the Toronto labour movement; praise for J.S. Wordsworth and Jimmy Simpson; activities at the Labour Temple; memories of Bowles’ Lunch at the corner of Bay and Queen Streets; and memories of a Toronto sports promoter and hotel owner named Tom Flanagan who promoted long distance runner Tom Longboat; and comments about Longboat.

1. The interviews took place in 1974 and resulted in the publication of a book entitled "The Great War and Canadian Society" edited by Daphne Read - copyright 1978 - New Hogtown Press, Toronto.~2. Release forms, data sheets, and summary analysis/transcripts are available in binders labelled Opportunities for Youth - War and Canadian Society in VSA's audio-visual section.~3. Part of a series of recorded interviews with elderly citizens who lived in Canada during the period of World War I. The interview material consists of their opinions and observations about the war, the war years, and the effect on Canadian society during and after WWI.~4. The interviewee signed an agreement giving consent for a recording of this interview to be placed in the Public Archives of Canada for the purposes of historical research and also signed a publication agreement allowing any transcribed portions of the interview to be used in the book under the condition that no full names, addresses or phone numbers would be published.~5. Subject description is based on information found in the fact sheet, deposit agreement, publication agreement and summary analysis.
