Interview of Bill Underwood of Toronto, age 79, who was born in Manchester, England in 1895 and came to Canada in 1910. He talks about the following subjects: his parents and sister; his parents’ decision to move to Canada to “give the children a chance” and because the family had relatives here; the arrival in Canada; terrible conditions aboard ship on the journey to Canada; traveling by train to Montreal; his mother getting work as a midwife to pay for the transportation costs; his learning to be a glass cutter and earning fifteen dollars a month; his next job as an office boy in an insurance office; his getting fired from that job because someone called him an insulting name like “Limey” and he fought with the person; working for a wholesaler; going to work for the Bell Telephone; enlisting when the First World War broke out; his army pay; how the country “went mad” when the war broke out; how “everyone wanted to be a hero”; his getting into the army because he had been a Boy Scout bugler; training at Valcartier; getting lice there; training on an old South African rifle and a Ross rifle; mock battles at Valcartier; the difficulty of adjusting to army discipline; getting blankets and not beds because Sam Hughes said that Canadians were tough enough to take blankets rather than beds, but the officers at Salisbury Camp got beds; finding it hard to take drill and be subordinate to people who were no better than he was; the lack of hostility between English Canadian soldiers and French Canadian soldiers; sailing to England; Scots playing bagpipes on the ship; a boxing match aboard ship; arriving in Plymouth; having to wait to unload the 33 troop ships; a mutiny on board because the soldiers did not know where they were going; training on Salisbury Plain; difficult living conditions in camp; an outbreak of spinal meningitis; the arrival in France; the death of 30 horses on the boat trip over to France and other mishaps aboard ship; the arrival in Brittany; eating hard tack and bully beef; getting French children to buy bread; on the march, carrying rounds of ammunition, a Ross rifle and clothing; leaving behind all but the essentials; getting a box of cigarettes from the Queen; going out with farmerettes; trench warfare; deserters getting shot or hanged; returning to Canada in June 1916 as a stretcher case; people looking at him, wondering if he was a returned soldier; being on compassionate leave because his mother was sick; on the army staff in Montreal in 1917; enlisting in Royal Flying Corps; going to Toronto in 1918; going to Camp Mohawk and Camp Borden; flying a Curtiss Jenny; readjusting to civilian life; getting a clothing allowance at the end of the war; going back to his old job at the Bell Telephone but quitting it because he could not take it; becoming assistant pay master for the Bell Telephone but later quit the company; attending activities at the YMCA: his wife as a volunteer worker waiting on soldiers; life in Toronto in 1918; Armistice Day celebrations; his marriage in 1923; his development of the self-defence technique called Defendo; and his career training civilians in Defendo.

1. The interviews took place in 1974 and resulted in the publication of a book entitled "The Great War and Canadian Society" edited by Daphne Read - copyright 1978 - New Hogtown Press, Toronto.~2. Release forms, data sheets, and summary analysis/transcripts are available in binders labelled Opportunities for Youth - War and Canadian Society in VSA's audio-visual section.~3. Part of a series of recorded interviews with elderly citizens who lived in Canada during the period of World War I. The interview material consists of their opinions and observations about the war, the war years, and the effect on Canadian society during and after WWI.~4. The interviewee signed an agreement giving consent for a recording of this interview to be placed in the Public Archives of Canada for the purposes of historical research and also signed a publication agreement allowing any transcribed portions of the interview to be used in the book under the condition that no full names, addresses or phone numbers would be published.~5. Subject description is based on information found in the fact sheet, deposit agreement, publication agreement and summary analysis.~6. Bill Underwood died at age 90 on 8 February 1986.
