He was in Canada for most of the First World War, joining the army when he was conscripted. He did not see military action but helped build a power plant in France. He talks about: his childhood; his first jobs; becoming an apprentice at the Jones and Moore Electric Company; making motors and generators 10 hours a day at another company; poor working conditions at that company; his wages; getting into the electrical repair business after the war; running an electric plant in France; a de-lousing plant in Le Havre, France; army food and other wartime living conditions; his marriage after he returned from the war; the higher cost of food after the war; opposition by Quebecers to the war; the increase in automization and mechanization during the war; postwar unemployment; labour unions; strikes; labour unrest; and the quest by workers to get a living wage.Langue :EnglishRemarques :Détails de l'inventaire : -
