Interview of Anna Pashka, age 77, who was born in Ukraine in 1897 and came to Canada with her family in 1911. She talks about: her father’s work; her childhood; her father needing help to write letters; someone writing a letter to her mother telling her to sell everything and join him in Canada, even though that is not what her father said; her working to help support her family when they arrived in Canada; living in a shack in Saskatoon with 3 other families; getting jobs in restaurants and a hotel; working conditions; working at a boarding house; the family’s cramped living conditions; socializing with other Ukrainians; a choir; fights at dances and a wedding; the family’s poverty; hardships faced by Ukrainian immigrants; various things her mother did to earn a living, such as fishing and selling home-brew; her mother’s work as a midwife; Doukhobor women; Ukrainians being called Bohunks and Galicians; Anglo-Saxons complaining before the war that Ukrainian immigrants were taking all the jobs; mistreatment of Ukrainians by Anglo-Saxons; recollections of the declaration of war; soldiers marching off to war; a boyfriend who was a soldier and who was killed not long after he went overseas; the senselessness of war; how young men who enlisted did not realize what they were getting into; Ukrainian men being rounded up and put in camps in Manitoba and Saskatchewan; her husband’s escape from an internment camp; various soldier friends; boys angry about Ukrainian girls going out with soldiers; discrimination against Ukrainians and how she did not know how to deal with it; Slavic people treated as the “bottom of the barrel”; the organization of the Ukrainian Labour Temple in 1921; more about the First World War; people’s feelings that they had an obligation to participate in the war; the attitudes of the Ukrainian immigrants to the war; her parents’ feelings that war brought misery and suffering; the feeling by immigrants at that time that Canada was not their home; skepticism in Canada about foreigners; conscription; farmers coming to the market in Saskatoon; people from the towns going to help with the harvest; the lack of employment in Saskatoon and how the war did not have an impact on this; wearing a petticoat as a skirt because she did not know any better; women’s role staying home and taking care of their families; prostitution; help from the Salvation Army; sources of food; more about discrimination against the Ukrainian immigrants; the Massey-Harris plant in Saskatoon; a strike in 1918; women working as domestics and in restaurants and hotels; her job in a hotel; her personal life; more about her job in a hotel; more about the Massey-Harris factory; the Armistice; the influenza epidemic; veterans who came back maimed; her family’s inability to pay her father’s medical bills; the help provided by the Salvation Army to needy people; religious faith of the immigrants from the old country; her marriage; high food prices during the war; the Winnipeg General Strike; the fear people had around that time that the world was coming to an end; the Depression; the growth of the SDP among immigrants in Edmonton, Calgary and Winnipeg; how the Labour Temple helped people; efforts by the Ukrainian immigrants to help themselves; her involvement in the Labour Temple; speaking at a meeting during a parade of unemployed people in 1929; giving a speech at a meeting of farmers in 1930 or 1931; running for alderwoman in Saskatoon; her husband’s jobs; how people managed to survive at a time when there was no welfare assistance; young men in labour camps during the Depression; people beaten by the RCMP; the On-to-Ottawa Trek; an RCMP raid during World War Two; complaints she made to help people on relief; and the Women’s Labour League.

1. The interviews took place in 1974 and resulted in the publication of a book entitled "The Great War and Canadian Society" edited by Daphne Read - copyright 1978 - New Hogtown Press, Toronto.~2. Release forms, data sheets, and summary analysis/transcripts are available in binders labelled Opportunities for Youth - War and Canadian Society in VSA's audio-visual section.~3. Part of a series of recorded interviews with elderly citizens who lived in Canada during the period of World War I. The interview material consists of their opinions and observations about the war, the war years, and the effect on Canadian society during and after WWI.~4. The interviewee signed an agreement giving consent for a recording of this interview to be placed in the Public Archives of Canada for the purposes of historical research and also signed a publication agreement allowing any transcribed portions of the interview to be used in the book under the condition that no full names, addresses or phone numbers would be published.~5. Subject description is based on information found in the fact sheet, deposit agreement, publication agreement and summary analysis.
