Davis, Murray, 1924-1997 : Murray Edward, actor, director and theatre educator (born at Newmarket, Ont 16 Feb 1924; died at Toronto 22 Jan 1997). Raised in Newmarket, the son of E.J. Davis of the Davis Leather Co, brother to Donald Davis and Barbara Chilcott. From 1942 to 1945, Murray is enlisted as a Lieutenant in the Royal Canadian Navy in charge of corvettes in North Atlantic Convoy duty. After the war, Murray and Donald studied at the University of Toronto where they graduated in 1948 and 1950 respectively. While there, Murray studied Political Economy and Theatre under the direction of Robert Gill at the Hart House Theatre. In those years Murray and Donald founded the Straw Hat Players in Muskoka, Ontario, a summer stock company which went on to local renown. Soon after, Murray, with the support of his brother and sister, Barbara Chilcott, founded the CREST THEATRE in Toronto in 1953. Its opening production (in January of 1954) was Gordon Daviot's Richard of Bordeaux with Murray Davis in the title role. Murray continued to direct many productions at the Crest until its closing.

With the closing of the Crest Theatre in 1966, Murray Davis went on to teach for three years at the National Theatre School in Montréal before retiring to pursue livestock farming in Ontario.
