The fonds consists of ten 11x14 inch selenium-toned archival photographic prints by photographer Ryan Carter. The photographs document the people and environment of Tent City, in Toronto. Ryan Carter, a documentary photographer began photographing the residents of Tent City in January 2002, and continued to photograph them until their eviction on September 24, 2002, as well as a few days following that event. Mr. Carter made 24 photographic visits to the site during 2002, and the photographs in the fonds represent a small portfolio of views from the larger project, selected by the archivist.

Tent City was a squatting site for homeless people in Toronto since 1997, although it's size increased dramatically (from a handful of people to over 125) in 1999 and 2000. During this time, many more tents and semi-permanent structures were constructed on the undeveloped land, which was owned by Home Depot. The site and the squatters gained national media attention for their activities, especially in 2002.

A decision was made to shut down the site and evict the squatters in September 2002.

Carter, Ryan : Ryan Carter is a Canadian documentary photographer. He graduated from Humber College, Toronto in 2003, with a Photography Diploma with Honours, and completed an internship with renowned Canadian photographer and Magnum Photo member Larry Towell in the same year. His work has been published in Canadian Geographic, CBC Radio 3, The Globe and Mail, The (London) Financial Times, Grazia Neri (Italy), and World Picture News, as well as by The Magenta Foundation, Photosensitive and New Zealand Tourism.

His work has been exhibited in London, England, Toronto, Vancouver and Nova Scotia. In addition, he has been the recipient of the National Geographic Grant, Eddie Adams Workshop (New York, 2005), and the David Barker Maltby Award from Humber College in 2003, among others.
