FROM A PLACE CALLED WAR is a documentary TV mini-series that provides a unique insight into the Second World War. Cold empirical facts, superimposed significant dates, black and white archival footage and still photographs are all given a deeply emotional dimension by means of the voice-over narration that discloses personal letters and diaries of the soldiers and civilians who experienced the war. Included are numerous love letters, tender last writings, some written only days before soldiers died in the combat. In addition, letters, from both Allied and Axis soldiers, offer an insight into the horrors of combat on the front lines. These are testimonials of hatred, fear, pride and courage. Letters from the home front also provide a unique impression of life in Canada during these cruel years. The documentary is filled with archival footage from the Second World War. Episode one in the series features archival footage and letters from the period that covers a number of significant dates: Nazi Germany's invasion of Poland (September 1, 1939), Germany's invasion of Denmark and Norway (April 9, 1940), Germany's conquest of the Netherlands, Belgium and France (May 10, 1940), German Forces reaching the English Channel (May 20, 1940), the period of The Night Blitz (Sept, 1940 - May, 1941), Japan's attack on Hong Kong (December 8, 1941), and Bataan Peninsula falling to the Japanese Forces (April 9, 1942). The episode also features voice recordings of British Prime Minister, Neville Chamberlain (September 3, 1939), Canadian Prime Minister, William L. M. King (September 3, 1939), and British Prime Minister, Winston Churchill (July 17, 1940). <46mn 45s>
