Interview of Glenn B. Petch, age 84 who was born on a farm near Owen Sound in 1890. He moved off the farm in 1900 and his father died in 1901. Among the subjects discussed are: moving to Toronto in 1905 and beginning his working life; the poverty of his family; the miller leaving flour for the Petch family, stating "I think it’s time Mrs. Petch had some flour"; life in a poor district of Toronto; his first job, at the [R. Pulley] Company; moving to the music company R.W. Williams; his dislike of factory work at the pulley company; his brother’s move to Saskatchewan in 1908; Petch’s job as manager of the phonograph department at R.W. Williams; his plans to go to China to manage a customs house for the Methodist Church in August 1914, plans dashed by his illness with scarlet fever and the outbreak of the First World War; his becoming a Methodist in 1908; losing his stutter on the night he was in a debate with two university students; more on his Methodist congregation; his not enlisting because he was sick; the enlistment of his friends because people called those who did not enlist quitters or "yellow"; the view that Christians should fight for their country; how women got into the workforce during the war; how before the war a man would be considered "a heel" for letting his wife work; Armistice celebrations; returned soldiers being greeted by mothers and wives; working conditions at R.W. Williams; the war effort on the home front; how wartime increased the competitiveness of business; efforts by other people to get his job because it was a good job; fainting at work one day in 1919 because he had fallen ill and not being able to work for three months; getting exhausted during the war because he worked in the stockroom during the day and in the office at night; doing customs work for Williams; importing all sorts of musical instruments for Williams after the war; the failure of the firm in 1929; and his later work at a publishing company and in sales.

1. The interviews took place in 1974 and resulted in the publication of a book entitled "The Great War and Canadian Society" edited by Daphne Read - copyright 1978 - New Hogtown Press, Toronto.~2. Release forms, data sheets, and summary analysis/transcripts are available in binders labelled Opportunities for Youth - War and Canadian Society in VSA's audio-visual section.~3. Part of a series of recorded interviews with elderly citizens who lived in Canada during the period of World War I. The interview material consists of their opinions and observations about the war, the war years, and the effect on Canadian society during and after WWI.
~4. The interviewee signed an agreement giving consent for a recording of this interview to be placed in the Public Archives of Canada for the purposes of historical research and also signed a publication agreement allowing any transcribed portions of the interview to be used in the book under the condition that no full names, addresses or phone numbers would be published.~5. Subject description is based on information found in the fact sheet, deposit agreement, publication agreement and summary analysis.
