Interview of Leslie G. Gallant, age 85, of Belmont House, Toronto, who was born in Norwich, England in 1889 and came to Canada in 1912. His father was a carpenter in Norwich. This is part of a series of recorded interviews with elderly citizens who lived in Canada during the period of World War I. The interview material consists of their opinions and observations about the war, the war years, and the effect on Canadian society during and after WWI. Subjects discussed include: moving to Canada; working as a junior clerk in an office helping school children; moving to Canada to get higher wages as a farm worker; his being bound by the terms of the government-assisted immigration program to stay in Canada for one year; learning farm work; his experiences with his boss; his dislike for his first job placement; his leaving his first job to go to a cheese factory; getting a job cutting wood at a factory; leaving it to work for a farmer, leaving that job; trying to find work in Toronto; working as a stenographer at the John Inglis factory for eight years; taking dictation; being chased by a drum major on Orange Day [the 12th of July]; being laid off temporarily during the economic depression of the 1930s; working for the Toronto Transit Commission for 37 years; more about his working life; working for McLaughlin Buick; enlisting in 1916 with the Canadian Field Artillery when he was working at Inglis; the manufacture of shells at Inglis; the number of workers and type of work at the company; working conditions and wages at Inglis; his return after the war, injured; getting another job at Inglis after the First World War; Whitley Camp in England; looking after horses; working as a cook, bombardier and gunner; German bombs hitting the front lines; wounded by shrapnel in his hip; the later effects of his wartime injury; being taken out of the war due to his injury and visiting his family in England at that time; his family’s pride in him; being anxious to get home to Canada; meeting his wife, who worked at Canada Packers; slackening of work after the war; the manufacture of electrical equipment; encouragement to be patriotic during the war; attitudes to the war; and getting $200 from the army, which he used as a down payment on a house.

1. The interviews took place in 1974 and resulted in the publication of a book entitled "The Great War and Canadian Society" edited by Daphne Read - copyright 1978 - New Hogtown Press, Toronto.~2. Release forms, data sheets, and summary analysis/transcripts are available in binders labelled Opportunities for Youth - War and Canadian Society in VSA's audio-visual section.~3. The interviewee signed an agreement giving consent for a recording of this interview to be placed in the Public Archives of Canada for the purposes of historical research and also signed a publication agreement allowing any transcribed portions of the interview to be used in the book under the condition that no full names, addresses or phone numbers would be published.~4. Subject description is based on information found in the fact sheet, deposit agreement, publication agreement and summary analysis.~5. Gallant was a Catholic, which sheds some light on why he was chased on the 12th of July, an Orange Order celebration.~6. There is some confusion about the chronology of his civilian career.
