The 1927 and 1931 Ontario Motion Picture Bureau catalogues describe this film as follows: "Before being sown, grain is treated with a formalin solution. Both the immersion and sprinkling methods are demonstrated." Three million dollars' worth of grain is lost due to grain smut yearly in Ontario. Loose smuts of oats is the most common and most damaging smut in Ontario. The film shows: extreme close-ups of wilting oat kernel, kernels of grain damaged by the smut, a pencil pointing to the damaged kernel, unhealthy barley kernel partially reduced to powder and a bottle of formalin solution used for treating grain for smut; close-ups of a man emptying grain onto a canvas spread out onto the ground and a man spreading the grain with a spade before spraying; close-ups of two men emptying sacks of grain onto a tarpaulin after the sacks have been dipped in the formalin solution; close-up of one man spraying formalin solution onto the grain on the tarpaulin while another man spreads and turns the grain with a spade; and close-up of two men covering the grain with sacking.
