Unedited interview of actor, writer and producer Frank Peppiatt about his experiences working in live television for the CBC. The interview is for a two-hour documentary entitled LIVE TO AIR, broadcast on CBC television on 16 September 2002. Among the subjects discussed are: how he started working in television; working with John Aylesworth at MacLaren Advertising as a writer of commercials; Peter McFarlane of CBC, who had been at MacLaren, asking Peppiatt and Aylesworth to write a comedy show for him at CBC called AFTER HOURS; working on AFTER HOURS with actress Jill Foster; being unable to stop laughing during some comedy sketches on live TV; sketches about Toronto streetcars; the two masters of ceremonies George Murray and Budd Knapp; the need for quick costume changes; Norman Jewison; forgetting lines during shows; the incident in which John Aylesworth got injured during an AFTER HOURS spoof of the syndicated U.S. show MY FAVOURITE STORY; working on THE BIG REVUE; the ease with which he and Aylesworth remembered their lines because they wrote them; George Murray and Billy O’Connor forgetting their lines; writing for the PERRY COMO SHOW; the hectic pace of writing the shows in a 30-week or 40-week series; fan mail; the critics; THE JACKIE RAE SHOW; Jack Kane; praise for the musicians with whom they worked; working with Juliette Cavazzi; working with Frank Sinatra in the U.S.; the learning experience of working in live TV at the CBC; the enthusiasm people felt about working on live TV; leaving Canada to work in New York; people with whom he worked, including Ted Kotcheff, Bill Davis and Don Hudson; doing excerpts from musical comedies; acting on the stage; censorship; acting in the Bernard Slade drama THE PRIZE WINNER; and a sketch using the special effect of a shot flipped upside down when he was on a trapeze. <55mn 21s>

1. This is a Betacam SX dub of originals shot on Betacam SP tapes 3 and 4.~2. The Canadian Broadcast Museum holds the Betacam SP originals.~3. Production date of the Betacam originals (date interview conducted) is 2002-05-10.~4. Betacam SX tape dubbed at CBC on 2002-05-13.~5. Some replies are rephrased at the request of the interviewer in order to create complete replies since the interviewer’s questions are edited out for the documentary.~6. Videotape and transcript available for consultation on LAC premises.~7. There are colour bars at the 30-minute mark of the tape.~8. Some audio continues during final colour bars.
