Unedited interview of actress Charmion King about her experiences working in live television for the CBC. The interview is for a two-hour documentary entitled LIVE TO AIR, broadcast on CBC television on 16 September 2002. Among the subjects discussed are: how she started working in television when she was offered a job by director Henry Kaplan; the advantage of having stage experience; an actress forgetting her lines; the story of Frances Hyland falling on a slippery floor during a live broadcast of WIND FROM THE SOUTH; the CBC’s Sumach Street rehearsal studios in Toronto; working with props; working with Ron Hartmann in THE LABYRINTH; using Vaseline over her make-up television giving audiences a chance to see plays they would not have been able to see in theatres; examples of good scripts such as SOME ARE SO LUCKY by Hugh Garner and A VERY CLOSE FAMILY by Bernard Slade; the willingness of CBC dramas to deal with controversial subjects; appearing with Gordon Pinsent in the play WILLOW CIRCLE by Joseph Schull; not being paid very much and meeting people in the street who told her that they did not watch the CBC; her early experience acting in the theatre and radio; never feeling secure in front of the camera; being scared about acting on television; making sure programs ended on time; mishaps on the set; people with whom she worked, such as Larry Mann, Jill Foster, Mavor Moore, Austin Willis, Corinne Conley, Lloyd Bochner, Don Francks and Tom Harvey; the 1950s as a period of learning rather than a golden age of television; and her opinion that the 1960s were a time when CBC television was doing more interesting work than it did in the 1950s, with a wider variety of subjects and more polish. <44mn>

1. This is a Betacam SX dub of originals shot on Betacam SP tapes.~2. The Canadian Broadcast Museum holds the Betacam SP originals.~3. Production date of the Betacam originals (date interview conducted) is 2002-05-09.~4. Betacam SX tape dubbed at CBC on 2002-05-10.~5. Some replies are rephrased at the request of the interviewer in order to create complete replies since the interviewer’s questions are edited out for the documentary.~6. Videotape and transcript available for consultation on LAC premises.~7. There are colour bars at approximately 30 minutes into the tape.~8. Charmion King died on 6 January 2007.
