Unedited interview of singer Shirley Harmer about her experiences working in live television for the CBC. The interview is for a two-hour documentary entitled LIVE TO AIR, broadcast on CBC television on 16 September 2002. Among the subjects discussed are: how she started working in television; singing a song to the puppet Uncle Chichimus; being terrified on her first television show, FOUR FOR THE SHOW with George Murray, Libby Morris and Billy O’Connor; doing the Dave Garroway show, GARROWAY AT LARGE, for NBC television in New York; the homesickness for her family while she was in New York; returning to Canada; Dodi Robb asking her to come back to Canada to sing on CANADIAN GENERAL ELECTRIC SHOWTIME; her return to Canada and joining SHOWTIME; the beauty of the sets, gowns and real flowers on the sets, even though the shows were broadcast only in black-and-white; praise for Howard Cable’s talent as a musician, conductor and composer; not being allowed to have cue cards because the CBC felt the singers were undisciplined if they were unable to memorize; the hectic pace of rehearsals and production; her summertime work with Paul Whiteman at Carnegie Hall and the Hollywood Bowl; the lack of a star system in Canada; the importance of the producer-directors; leaving Canada to work on THE GEORGE GOBEL SHOW for NBC in 1957-1958 because the CBC kept performers only on short-term contracts; the lack of job security at the CBC; Juliette; the need for rapid costume changes in live television; dancers Alan and Blanche Lund; asking singers to dye their hair blonde because it looked better on television; the camaraderie of the female singing stars at the CBC, who were just trying hard to do their own jobs; singing with Robert Goulet, forgetting lyrics and trying not to giggle; rubber balls bouncing around the studio during a dance number; her preference for ballads; her glamorous appearance; receiving an award in 1956 for best female vocalist; having to take elocution lessons; rehearsals; praise for the talent of the musicians; trying to learn dance steps; an incident in which she had to jump into the arms of a dancer but started sliding down because her silk costume was slippery; the camaraderie of people who worked in live television; the wholesome look of 1950s television; live television as the golden years of television; her happy memories of that era; and appearing in the movie THE HANGMAN in California. <41mn>

Production date of the Betacam originals (date interview conducted) is 2002-06-15.~4. Betacam SX tape dubbed at CBC on 2002-06-18.~5. Some replies are rephrased at the request of the interviewer in order to create complete replies since the interviewer’s questions are edited out for the documentary.~6. Videotape and transcript available for consultation on LAC premises.~7. There are colour bars 30 minutes into the tape.~8. THE HANGMAN was released in 1959.~9. Shirley Harmer appeared on GARROWAY AT LARGE in the 1953-1954 season.
