Unedited interview of actor, writer and director David Greene about his experiences working as a director in live television for CBC television. The interview is for a two-hour documentary entitled LIVE TO AIR, broadcast on CBC television on 16 September 2002. Among the subjects discussed are: how he started working in television; his arrival in Toronto when television was just starting in Canada; his going to New York to act in ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA with Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh; meeting Mavor Moore; Moore encouraging him to go to the CBC; his experience as a Shakespearean actor with no experience as a director at that time; working with set designer Nicolai Soliviov; his learning how to be a director; directing Lorne Greene in OTHELLO; the responsibility of CBC directors to produce, direct, choose music, cast and do other tasks that producers did not do in U.S. television; the need to improvise; working in the small CBC studios; developing innovative techniques with the cameramen; scripts in Canada; Arthur Hailey and his script for FLIGHT INTO DANGER; working with set designers; having to plan the movement of the three cameras while taking into account the placement of the cables; the positioning of the microphone booms; the pandemonium in the control room during a live production and his pretending to be calm so as to give the appearance of knowing what he was doing; the need for precision in live television; more about producing FLIGHT INTO DANGER; the acclaim for FLIGHT INTO DANGER when it was shown in Canada and Britain; his background as an art student and newspaper reporter; producing MACBETH; the calibre of Canadian actors, many of whom had come from radio; the use of mirrors in his production of THE PORTRAIT OF DORIAN GRAY, starring Lloyd Bochner; working with Rudi Dorn; the creative freedom of the early days of television; his doing a production every three weeks; working with actors; his later work in U.S. television; the adventure of working in early television; bringing a recording of FLIGHT INTO DANGER to New York to try to get a job in television there; his later work in the U.S.; the sense of family among the people who worked at CBC in the early days; and his admiration for Tyrone Guthrie. <54mn 14s>

Production date of the Betacam originals (date interview conducted) is 2002-06-07.~4. Betacam SX tape dubbed at CBC on 2002-06-11.~5. Some replies are rephrased at the request of the interviewer in order to create complete replies since the interviewer’s questions are edited out for the documentary.~6. Videotape and transcript available for consultation on LAC premises.~7. David Greene died on 7 April 2003.
