Unedited interview of television singer, writer and producer Allan Blye about his experiences working in live television at the CBC. The interview is for a two-hour documentary entitled LIVE TO AIR, broadcast on CBC television on 16 September 2002. Among the subjects discussed are: how he got into television; his arriving in Toronto from Winnipeg in 1956 when he was 19 years old; auditioning as a singer for various CBC shows and getting work on some summer series; his first real break on network television; working as a singer on CROSS CANADA HIT PARADE; working with Stan Harris, Joyce Hahn and Wally Koster; an incident in which he forgot to do up his fly during a quick costume change; the lights going out during a live broadcast in which he was singing a difficult song while the Duke Ellington Orchestra was accompanying him; a mishap in which he was singing a song during a live broadcast in which the line piping in the orchestra music from another studio failed and he could not hear the musical accompaniment; problems with forgetting song lyrics; the excitement of doing live television; working on the series SHOWTIME; faking the Italian lyrics to a song because the cue cards caught fire; working with orchestra leader Jack Kane; working on musical arrangements with Jack Kane; singing on demo tapes of Jack Kane arrangements for singers such as Steve Lawrence; meeting Fred Rogers and appearing on Fred Rogers’ television show produced in Pittsburgh; singers Sylvia Murphy, Shirley Harmer and Tommy Ambrose; working with Juliette Cavazzi; Juliette’s talent and star quality; the amount of talent that was at CBC during the era of live television; the challenge of performing on live television; singer Billy O’Connor; acting in some CBC dramas; his work as a television writer; the need for quick costume changes in live television; and colleagues such as Stan Harris and Norman Jewison. <50mn 25s>

1. This is a Betacam SX dub of originals shot on Betacam SP tapes 16 and 17 (there are colour bars at approximately 30 minutes into this dub).~2. The Canadian Broadcast Museum holds the Betacam SP originals.~3. Some replies are rephrased at the request of the interviewer in order to create complete replies since the interviewer’s questions are edited out for the documentary.~4. Videotape and transcript available for consultation on LAC premises.~5. Production date of the Betacam originals (date interview conducted) is 2002-06-10.~6. Betacam SX tape dubbed at CBC on 2002-06-12.~7. Allan Blye went on to a career as a producer in U.S. television, including THE SONNY AND CHER SHOW on CBS in 1976-1977 and the syndicated made-in Canada THE BOBBY VINTON SHOW.
