Unedited interview of newspaper columnist, author, and CBC television host Alex Barris about his experiences working in live television at the CBC. The interview is for a two-hour documentary entitled LIVE TO AIR, broadcast on CBC television on 16 September 2002. Among the subjects discussed are: interviewing Calvin Jackson, the star of the series JAZZ WITH JACKSON; how he started working in television; the start of television in Canada; writing and hosting a CBC TV show; interviewing Anthony Quayle; his late-night variety show THE BARRIS BEAT and how he got his inspiration from THE STEVE ALLEN SHOW; working with Norman Jewison, Sammy Sales, Larry Mann, Jack Duffy and Roy Roberts; his making a mistake on a live show in which he introduced singer Mary Jane Ferguson instead of throwing to commercial; a sketch in which Gloria Lambert, with her New England accent, said "fork and knife" instead of knife and fork; working with Len Casey and Phil Nimmons; a comedy sketch with Jack Duffy in which Duffy was getting ready to jump out a skyscraper window and a stage hand walked by, ruining the shot; the show BARRIS AND COMPANY; his enjoyment in singing and performing as well as interviewing; Frank Peppiatt; John Aylesworth; the excitement of doing live television; ad-libbing in live television; working with Juliette; CBC radio producer Sandy Stewart seeing Barris performing the song Ballad of Marilyn Bell, which Barris had written, at a Toronto Press Club event; how this prompted Stewart to recommend him for television; Stewart’s suggestion that Barris would be a good host for a late night CBC TV variety show; the enthusiasm and belief in the medium of television by the people who worked in the early days of television; and the fun he had doing the musical-variety series THE BARRIS BEAT. <41mn>

1. This is a Betacam SX dub of originals shot on Betacam SP tapes 14 and 15 (there are colour bars at approximately 30 minutes into this dub).~2. The Canadian Broadcast Museum holds the Betacam SP originals.~3. Some replies are rephrased at the request of the interviewer in order to create complete replies since the interviewer’s questions are edited out for the documentary.~4. Videotape and transcript available for consultation on LAC premises.~5. Alex Barris died on 15 January 2004 at age 81.~6. Dub goes to black and colour bars at approximately 29 minutes.
