Photographic assignments (in total ca. 825) done for major Canadian-published newspaper supplements, including the "Star Weekly" and "Weekend Magazine" as well as various Canadian periodicals, including but not exclusively "Maclean's", and "Chatelaine", among others. The contents of this fonds are varied: assignments range from views of Canadian cities and small towns, historical events, industrial activities, and portrait sittings of important Canadian cultural, political, sports and industrial leaders. The eclectic nature of photo-journalism is shown in the range of events and sites documented. Many of the stories reflect immediate interests of the day, and as such become an important record of the time, such as coverage of students in the late 1960s or Toronto during the threat of the Cuban Missile Crisis. Photo essays like these speak to popular concerns with hippies, the Cold War, and other matters. There are also assigments concerning the Royal Tour of 1959; the founding of the NDP in 1961; poverty in the Maritime; tenant power; the War Meaures Act of 1970; students in the 1960s; dying miners in St. Lawrence, Newfoundland; the fishermen's strikes of 1971; a visit to the Vimy Memorial; aboriginal peoples; uranium mining; hydro-electric power at Churchill Falls, etc.

This is an important component of Canada's photographic record from 1955 to 1990, with the 1960s being most extensively covered. Images from these 825 assignments were published along with text provided, usually by editorial staff from the newspaper supplements or the magazines. It should be noted that Ericht was in fact the director of photography at Maclean's Magazine from 1965 to 1971.

Ehricht, Horst, 1928- : Horst Ehricht was born in 1928 in Berlin, Germany. In 1948, he fled from East to West Germany and soon after emigrated to France. In 1951, he moved to Canada and pursued his passion for photography at Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson), graduating in 1955 with Honours and the Director's trophy for highest Photography Achievement.
Beginning his professional career in 1955, Ehricht specialized in editorial photography, photographic illustration, corporate and advertising photography, as well as documentary film. From 1965 to 1971, he served as the Director of Photography at Maclean's magazine. In 1971, he returned to freelance photography, contributing to numerous films, television shows for the CBC, and various corporate projects.
Ehricht's work appeared in prestigious publications such as Maclean's, Time, Life, Sports Illustrated, Chatelaine, Star Weekly, Weekend Magazine, Reader's Digest (US), Business Week, London Sunday Times Magazine, Argosy, and Life Book Series on Science and Nature. He also sold his work to Look, Fortune, National Geographic, Paris Match, Realités, Panorama, and other European magazines.
His notable achievements include multiple Art Director Club Awards for best picture, best story coverage, and best color photography. He covered major events such as Expo, the 1976 Olympics, the Cannes Film Festival, the Monaco Grand Prix, and the International Hockey Tournament in Vienna.
Ehricht was also active in documentary filmmaking, working with Crawley Films, Reason Associated with David Mackay for Marshall McLuhan, the Ontario Government, and Chetwyn Film Production for CTV's "Wide World of Sports." His assignments took him around the globe, including extensive travel throughout Canada, the Arctic, Alaska, the United States, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, Polynesia, Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Iran, Israel, and Europe.
In recognition of his contributions to the arts, Ehricht was elected as a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 1978. He passed away in 2019.

The material was arranged by the photographer but not in chronological order. The arrangement seems to be by assignment, although this is not always true. Ericht boxed his collection in 16 numbered boxes (note he did not use box 10) and the photo assignment envelopes were then numbered 1-end of each box. The photo assignments were not put into the boxes in chronological order, so that work from the 1950s may appear in box 16. This means that the entire hand-written paper finding aid must be searched to locate work from a particular year. Many assignments include both colour and black and white photography.

LAC has reboxed the collection following Ehricht's arrangement but using LAC box numbers for retrieval purposes. A list at the beginning of the finding aid 239 allows the researcher to convert the Ehricht box and file number to the LAC box number.

There are contact sheets for all assignments, although they are not always complete. The identification is minimal, usually no more than the title of the assigment, which identifies subject or place or topic. There are no tear sheets with the collection. Further identification might be possible by consulting the magazine the work appeared in.
