Sub-sub-series consists of maps used by the Dominion Bureau of Statistics for work related to the 1956 census, and includes: Federal Electoral Districts (F.E.D.) with Enumeration Areas (E.A.) and Density of population maps. For a listing of the six atlases, see the linked file-level descriptions; for a description of the estimated 500 oversize enumeration area maps, see the linked accession record for RG31M 79003/23.

Note there are two types of FED/EA maps available for the 1956 census. The FED/EA maps in the atlases constitute the reference collection of 1956 FED/EA maps maintained by Statistics Canada until 2007. In contrast, the FED/EA maps available in linked accession RG31M 79003/23 are typically oversize map conglomerates: taped-together pieces of printed maps cut out in the shape of electoral districts, with hand annotations indicating the enumeration areas.

Sub-sub-series also consists of enumeration area descriptions (in RG31 volume 1310): these records that describe, in narrative form, the boundaries of each enumeration area used by the Dominion Bureau of Statistics during the 1956 census. The booklets are organized numerically by electoral district. Sub-sub-series also consists of a folder with listings of Official Groupings of Enumeration Areas (in RG31 volume 1570).

Cartographic material (atlases) (Électronique) Finding Aid 31-54 is a compilation of atlas cover pages and indices, along with a listing of maps by archival volume number. 31-54 for atlases (90: Ouvert)

Cartographic material (Électronique) 1956 EDList is a listing of electoral district names and numbers used for the 1956 census that was created by the Dominion Bureau of Statistics. It can be used as a guide for ordering maps and enumeration area descriptions, but does not list maps nor enumeration area descriptions in Library and Archives Canada's holdings. Atlases transferred from Statistics Canada in 2007. Additional maps transferred from Statistics Canada in 1979. Descriptions and listings of enumeration areas were part of the Census forms and instructions sub-series (Arc. Ref. R233-39-X-E) until 2019.
