The series comprises records which document the Professional Writers Association of Canada's efforts to negotiate standard agreements with periodicals and mediate grievances between freelance writers and periodicals. The correspondence and minutes of the ethics and contract negotiating committee show the development of a standard contract for freelance writers and a code of ethics to govern the relationship between periodicals and writers. These records also reveal the committee's efforts to negotiate agreements with specific magazines to use the standard contract and code of ethics--those that signed the agreements became PWAC signatories. Records of the national grievance or mediation committee and the Toronto Grievance Committee demonstrate PWAC's role in mediating disputes between its member writers and periodical markets. These files document both the resolution of specific grievances initiated by writers and more strategic initiatives by the national committee. The files of the Ideas Bank hold story ideas by writers that were offered to a periodical but also submitted to PWAC's Ideas Bank to protect the writer against a magazine stealing the story idea and assigning it to one of its staff writers.

In addition, the series holds files for specific periodicals which can include general correspondence concerning fees and practices, negotiations regarding the standard contract and code of ethics, and grievances against the magazine. These include Books Canada, Canadian, Canadian Dimension, Canadian Geographic, Chatelaine, Content magazine, Cottage Life, Financial Post, Harrowsmith, Homemakers, Maclean's, Quill and Quire, Saturday Night, This Magazine, Toronto Life, and Weekend Magazine, among others.
