Recording of part of the ceremony to mark the opening of the Paramount Theatre in Saint John, New Brunswick, starting at 8:15 p.m. The recording starts with comments by Lieutenant-Governor Larry MacLaren, who talks about Famous Players Canadian Corporation and its role in the building of the theatre, the activities of Famous Players Canadian Corporation in film exhibition in Canada, the manufacture of motion picture film prints in Canada, and the contribution made by Famous Players during the Second World War. The next speaker is J.D. McKenna, the Mayor of Saint John, who congratulates Famous Players and thanks the company for building the theatre. He also talks about the history of motion picture theatres in the city, starting with the theatre in the Mechanics Institute organized under the auspices of the late Walter Golding. He then gives the key to the theatre to Harrison Howe, manager of the theatre. Howe reads a telegram from John J. Fitzgibbons, the president of Famous Players Canadian Corporation. Among the people thanked in the telegram are F.G. Spencer and Spencer's sons Gerald and Gordon. Howe announces that the proceeds from the evening are being donated to the Central Benevolent Fund of the Saint John branch of the Canadian Legion. Howe then presents a cheque for the evening's receipts to Garfield Stevens, president of the local Saint John Legion. Stevens expresses thanks and describes some of the services provided by the Legions to local war veterans. <11mn>
