The firm Armstrong, Beere and Hime : The firm of Armstrong, Beere and Hime of early Toronto advertised as "Engineers, Draughtsmen and Photographists, a partnership consisting of William Armstrong (1822-1914), civil engineer who emigrated from Ireland to Canada in 1851 and went on to achieve considerable prominence as a watercolour artist, David Manders Beere (1833-1909) was born in West Meath, Ireland and died in Melbourne, Australia, and Humphrey Lloyd Hime (1833-1903), remembered for his contribution as photographer to the Assiniboine and Saskatchewan Exploring Expedition of 1858, achieved national and international acclaim during the 1850s and 1860s, particularly for its photographs of the Grand Trunk Railway system but also for its photographs of landscapes throughout Canada. Armstrong's photographs of Lake Superior, for example, won an award at the annual Provincial Exhibition of 1862, and formed part of the Canadian display at the Dublin Exhibition in 1865. Hime's photographs of 1858 are significant because they are the earliest photographs to document the landscapes and the native people of Western Canada.

In 1857, the firm sent a series of 100 extremely fine panoramic views of Toronto, taken in 1856, to London as part of the city's submission to become the capital of the Province of Canada. Library and Archives Canada acquired a set of 24 photographs, salt prints, from that series by Armstrong, Beere and Hime in 1992. LAC hold small selection of stereo views by AB&H and newspaper references of the construction of the University of Toronto (1857-58), of Niagara Falls (1858), of Toronto (ca.1859) and of Lake Superior (1862). Very few other Armstrong, Beere and Hime photographs, taken either or in partnership have survived to the present time. The acquisition of these three photographs of the Northern Railway form a subsantial addition to the Library and Archives Canada holdings - ca. 48 items - of the work of this nationally significant nineteenth-century firm of Canadian photographers.
