This accession consists of records created and/or maintained by the Meat Hygiene Division. The Division's primary work was its meat inspection program to ensure that meat and poultry products were produced under sanitary conditions, that they met Canadian standards for wholesomeness and safety, and that they were properly labeled. It also ensured that exported products met the standards of importing countries.

This accession includes, but is not limited to, records on the following subjects: Meat Inspection Act; Canadian Poultry and Egg Producers Council; Canadian Meat Packing Establishments; Consumer Complaints; Unsatisfactory Shipments; Reports of Meat Inspection; and Laboratory Exams.

Created and maintained by the Meat Hygiene Division, Food Production and Inspection Branch of the Department of Agriculture, these records were subsequently transferred to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency when the agency inherited these functions upon its creation in 1997.
