Anatomist in Situ won a Special Jury Award at the International Scientific Film Festival in Hungary in 2003. Anatomist in Situ is part of a trilogy entitled the somalore series which also features Breathe, and Scourge. All these works are between science and art - a discomfort zone exemplified by Anatomist in situ.
The video (with three related colour photographs on vellum) centres on Dr. Shakti Chandra, an anatomy professor for 30 years at Memorial University's Medical School. In her laboratory the physician reflects on the imagined lives and dreams of the dead whose organs she holds, whose skin she slices into. Digitally animated ghosts emerge and fade, close views show the evidence of lives lived in small scars and ragged nails.
