Blume, Helmut, 1914-1998 : A pianist, radio commentator, educator and administrator born in Berlin, Germany, Helmut Blume received his musical training at the University of Berlin, the Hochschule für Musik in the same city with composer Hindemith, and in England with Hungarian pianist Louis Kentner. In 1940 he settled in Canada, where he continued his musical studies at the Toronto Conservatory of Music with pianist and composer Alberto Guerrero. In 1942, he was appointed director of the piano department at the Hambourg Conservatory, also in Toronto.

In 1944, Blume began his radio career at CBC Montréal. Appointed writer and commentator at the German-language section of the CBC International Service, he eventually become its director. During his 20 year career with the CBC, he also acted as a musical advisor, performer and lecturer. He produced numerous programs, in particular the "International Concert" radio series from 1953 to 1962, "Opera Stars and Stories", and various programs of the "CBC Wednesday Night" series. In 1958, the television series "Music to See", made up of eight lectures by Blume, was awarded the Ohio State Award.

In 1946, Blume joined the faculty of McGill University. In 1955, as Director of the Department of Keyboard and Vocal Music, he founded the opera workshop. In 1964 he was appointed dean of the Faculty of Music. During his tenure as dean, he initiated a series of changes in course structure and set up an electronic music studio directed by composer Istvan Anhalt.

In 1965 Blume was a founding member of the Canadian Association of University Schools of Music (CAUSM), renamed the Canadian University Music Society in 1981. He is the author of a far-ranging study of music teaching entitled A National School of Music for Canada, published in 1978.
