Waddington, Geoffrey, 1904-1966 : A conductor, administrator and violinist born in Leicester, England, Geoffrey Waddington came to Canada with his parents in 1907. His family then decided to settle in Lethbridge, Alberta, where as a boy he learned to play the violin. The recipient of a scholarship in 1921, he continued his musical training at the Toronto Conservatory of Music (TCM) with well-known musicians such as Luigi von Kunits, Leo Smith and Healey Willan. A member of the TCM teaching faculty from 1922 to 1926, he also made a number of tours as a violinist (from 1921 to 1925) and as a member of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (from 1925 to 1928).

Waddington began his radio career at station CKNC in 1922 and was its music director from 1926 to 1933. In addition to the Canadian Eveready Concert Orchestra, he conducted the orchestras of a number of sponsored programs including "The Neilson Hour". After becoming music director of CBC Winnipeg in 1938, he was responsible for the radio program "Geoffrey Waddington Conducts" until 1943. As well, at CBC Toronto he conducted for various programs including "The Geoffrey Waddington Show" and "The Edmund Hockridge Show" (from 1946 to 1947). In 1948 he was a joint founder of the CBC Opera Company, whose radio presentations of La Bohème, Peter Grimes, and Deirdre were enthusiastically received. In 1952, he was appointed music director of the CBC, where he founded CBC Symphony Orchestra, of which he was music director until 1964 when it disbanded. Attentive to Canadian music, he directed the creation of a number of Canadian works (Algonquin Symphony by Adaskin; Horoscope by Matton; Five Concepts by Somers; and Divertimento No 3 by Weinzweig) and, over the air, allowed a wide audience to become familiar with music that is both rich and complex.
