This series encompasses Carroll's life's work as a staff and freelance journalist. Files generally consist of both notes and drafts as well as photographs and any audio-visual material (ie taped interviews) for each assignment completed. Jock Carroll joined the Standard as a journalist and photographer in 1950. He was retained on staff in 1951, when the Standard became Weekend Magazine and stayed with the national weekly until 1969. Carroll had managed the Toronto office of Weekend Magazine and when it closed, he successfully petitioned for the return of all his photographs and the transfer of copyright from the publication back to him. Carroll then joined the staff of the Toronto Telegram, though the position only lasted two years. In 1971 the Telegram was folded. From 1972 to 75, Carroll was the editor of Pocket Books.

There is a large bank of photographs (primarily negatives) within this series that make up Carroll's reference library of images which he used as a freelancer. Carroll organized these alphabetically by subject. Also, the photographs Carroll took for Weekend Magazine (from 1950-1969) which were returned to him in 1969 can be found within this series. They are organized by the negative number that Weekend assigned each item. The original envelopes have been retained and can be considered an original finding aid as they contain the date and caption information.
