Robertson, Gordon, 1917-2013 : (Robert) Gordon Robertson, public servant, was born in Davidson, Saskatchewan, on 19 May 1917, to John Gordon and Lydia Adelia (Paulson) Robertson. Robertson acquired a B.A. from the University of Saskatchewan in 1938, a B.A. Juris in 1940 from Oxford University of Great Britain as a Rhodes Scholar and an M.A. in 1941 from the University of Toronto. In addition, he received an honorary L.L.D. from the universities of Saskatchewan (1959), McGill (1963), Dalhousie (1977), British Columbia (1982), Oxford (1983), and Carleton (1990), as well as from the Law Society of Upper Canada (1994).

Robertson began his career as a public servant in the Department of External Affairs in Ottawa in 1941 as Third Secretary and then as Assistant to the Under-Secretary of State. As Secretary to the Office of the Prime Minister (1945-1949), Robertson functioned as an advisor to Mackenzie King. From 1949 to 1953 he served the Privy Council Office as a Member of the Cabinet Secretariat and then as Assistant Secretary to Cabinet. He was Deputy Minister of Northern Affairs and National Resources and Commissioner of the Northwest Territories from 1953 to 1963. Constitutional matters became the focus of the last sixteen years of Robertson's career as Clerk of the Privy Council and Secretary to the Cabinet (1963 to 1975) and Secretary to the Cabinet for Federal-Provincial Relations (1975-1979). Following his career in the federal government, Robertson was President of the Institute for Research on Public Policy from 1980-1984. In addition, he served as Chancellor of Carleton University from 1980-1990. Gordon Robertson received the Vanier Medal in 1970 and the Companion of the Order of Canada in 1976. He passed away in Ottawa on January 15, 2013.

This portrait is one part of two drawings that make up a dual portrait. Grey executed this drawing in coloured pastels, while the accompanying portrait is drawn using monochrome pastels. When displaying, the monochrome is on the left, the colour on the right.
