The fonds consists of correspondence, sketches, manuscripts of poetry and short stories, as well as photographs, films, and other documentation relating to Almuth Lütkenhaus and her artistic work, 1936-1996.

Lütkenhaus, Almuth Katharina, 1930-1996 : Born Katharina Almuth Wirsing, in Hamm, Germany, in 1930, the sculptor Almuth Katharina Lütkenhaus studied at art colleges in Dortmund and Muenster from 1948-1952. She had already established herself as a successful creative artist prior to her arrival in Canada with her second husband, in 1966. Settling in Ontario, she created over 25 life-sized sculptures for public buildings, as well as numerous smaller sculptures for public buildings or individuals. Her friendship with important personalities such as Barker Fairley, Dorothy Livesay, Robertson Davies and Margaret Laurence provided her with the opportunity to create busts of these important personalities. She won several prizes for her sculptures and for her movie, "Living Bronze," which shows her creating one of her major pieces.

Through her work, in particular "Crucified Woman," Lütkenhaus sought not only to give her work artistic expression, but also have it serve as a commentary on contemporary society. In addition to her creative work, Lütkenhaus taught art and sought to inspire younger artists. Thus, she taught art at St. Mildred College in Oakville and was a founder of the "Oakville Group" of artists. In 1968, she established the Department of Sculpture at Mohawk College, Hamilton. She served as "artist in residence" of the Ottawa School of Art from 1981 to 1985. Illness during the last years of her life made her step back from her demanding work as sculptor and devote herself to creative writing. She died in November 1996.
