James, Geoffrey, 1942- : Geoffrey James is a Toronto-based artist who was born in Wales on the 9 January 1942. James studied Modern History, attaining his MA at Wadham College of Oxford University in 1964 and is a self-taught photographer.
James has exhibited throughout North America and internationally. In Canada, a sample of the institutions he has exhibited at are The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery, Toronto; The University of Toronto Art Centre, Toronto; Presentation House Gallery, North Vancouver; Equinox Gallery, Vancouver; Canadian Centre for Architecture, Montreal; Centre international d'art contemporain de Montreal, Montreal, and Galerie Rene Blouin, Montreal, and in the United States in cities such as New York, Chicago, Washington, San Diego, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. Internationally, he has exhibited in various locations throughout France, England, Spain, Italy, Hungary, Switzerland, Amsterdam, Germany, Korea and Japan.
Some of the institutions that retain James' work are the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa; Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography, Ottawa; Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto; Musee d'art contemporain and the Canadian Centre for Architecture, both in Montreal; Museum of Modern Art, New York; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco; Cleveland Museum of Fine Art, Cleveland; Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris, France; Palazzo Braschi, Rome, Italy; Musee de Elsee, Lausanne, Switzerland and the Graphothek der Stadtbucherei in Stuttgart, Germany.

A selection of the variety of awards and fellowships that Geoffrey James received include a Fellowship at the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in Fine Arts in Chicago, 1986; Artist in Residence at Centre Internationale de Recherche de Creation d'Animation, Villeneuve-les-Avignon in France, 1987; Guggenheim Fellowship from the Guggenheim Foundation in New York, 1991; Prix Victor Lynch Staunton from Canada Council, 1994; Gershon Iskowitz Prize; Roloff Beny Photography Book Award (for "Paris"), and he received several Canada Council and Ministere des Affaires Culturelles du Quebec Grants throughout his career.
