His historical adventure novels successfully combine an extensive knowledge of history with personal narrative, introducing young people to the richness of Canada's history through interesting reading. The Tom Penny series, in particular, has brought him much praise. His novels have been translated widely and adapted for film. German received The Ottawa Citizen Award for non-fiction in 1991 for his history of the Canadian Navy, "The Sea Is at Our Gates".
