Bates, Maxwell, 1906-1980 : Maxwell Bates was born in Calgary, Alberta, on December 14, 1906. He was one of Canada's most important artists of the 20th century, as well as a respected architect and a profound writer.
Bates spent 1931 to 1939 in London, England, exhibiting regularly with the Twenties Group. As a member of the British Expeditionary Force sent to France in 1940, he was captured by the Germans and interned in a prison camp from 1940 to 1945.
Returning to Calgary in 1946, Bates was an architect in his father's firm before suffering a stroke in 1961 and moving to Victoria, British Columbia. His work has been exhibited in Auckland, London, Manchester, Mexico City, Paris, Philadelphia, Tokyo and all of Canada's major cities. Retrospective exhibitions of his work were held in Regina and Edmonton (1960-1961), Victoria (1966), Winnipeg (1968), and Vancouver (1973). He was a key figure in the renaissance of the visual arts in Vancouver in the 1960s and 1970s, and he brought international attention to Canada through his contacts, his work and his initiative in establishing places such as the Western Front and Intermedia.
Bates received many awards for his painting. He was a member of the International Institute of Arts and Letters, the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, and the Order of Canada. He died in Victoria on September 14, 1980.
