The file comprises a travel log (in two parts) of Robert Hume's visit to Canada and the United States in 1836 and 1837. The log was apparently written up from his diaries for these years (perhaps after his return to England) and possibly intended for publication, or for others to read. It appears to be incomplete. Some entries at the end of the second part were added later in his life and unrelated to his travels in 1836 and 1837. These consist of a ledger of general expenses, notes of produce from crops, farm livestock, inventory and stock on hand. The first part of the travel log comprises 232 pages, covering from 26 March 1836 to 23 January 1837. The second part of the travel log continues this narrative, from 24 January 1837 to 2 June 1837 (112 pages), followed by the ledger and farm notes mentioned above (88 pages).

The travel log describes the outbound voyage, from his departure from North Shields, near Newcastle-upon-Tyne in England, aboard the sailing ship "Frederick Young", to his arrival at Grosse-Ile on 26 May 1836; his first impressions of Quebec and Montreal; his journey from Lachine to Cobourg, from 19 to 23 June 1836 (aboard the steamboat "Great Britain" from Prescott to Cobourg); his stay with the Jopling family near Cobourg; his impressions of Upper Canada, the people and their manners, the farms and its prospects for an emigrant; and his travels in the neighbouring states, particularly New York and Ohio, and people he stayed with there like the Pow brothers, also from Northumberland, England.
