The file consists of the diary of Robert Hume from August 1845 to July 1849. Hume returned to Upper Canada from England in late 1845 to purchase a farm in the Cobourg area. Entries from December 1845 to March 1846 show him trying obtain land by purchase or rent for the coming year on favourable terms. He examined several farms in different localities and made a number of offers. The diary offers an strong sense of the land market in Upper Canada and its operation.

For example, in this particular transaction, Hume was disappointed: "After again seeing Mr. Clark and proposing to assist him to the amount of £75 in concluding the agreed arrangement he concludes on not confirming it as he now expects his brother from Ireland who will occupy the farm himself. Thus my expectations of meeting with any engagement here are completely baffled. Had today letters from home-where a great scarcity is expected. This would I should think materially assist Canada where crops are pretty fair by opening more widely the channel of a trade in corn [wheat] only yet in its infancy between this country & Britain". This passage foreshadows the emerging wheat trade between Ontario and Great Britain, which became a key source of the province's growth in the 19th century.
