This medal was given to all officers and men who were employed in North China and in the valley of the Yang-tse-Kiang between June 11th and December 31st 1900, and also to those Indian troops who served in China under the orders of General Sir. A. Gaselee. The engraved message "Defence of Legations" on the clasp indicates that this particular medal was given to those who defended the Pekin [sic] Legations between June 10th and August 14th 1900. David Oliphant, of the British Consular Service, China, died in defence of the British Legation, Peking, on July 5th 1900. He was the younger brother of Stuart Oliphant, who was the father of Betty Oliphant, ballet mistress of the National Ballet of Canada and founding principal of Canada's National Ballet School. Library and Archives Canada is presently in possession of three China medals from 1900. The David Oliphant medal, another which is without a suspension mount (MFN 6728) and a third which has three suspension mounts, including one for the Defence of Legations (MFN 6727). This last one is mentioned in a 1962 letter from the Dominion Archivist, W. Kaye Lamb, to the donor of the David Oliphant medal: "We already have a similar one in our collection, but the ribbon is different: yours, I think, has the correct one" (it is to be noted that the "different" ribbon may in fact simply have been faded, and the yellow already turned to white.)
