Robert Glenny Hector was born in Kinneff, Kincardine (Scotland) on February 11, 1840. He migrated to Canada in 1855 and settled in Montreal. Later he moved to Stratford, Ontario, and it was there that he joined the Stratford Infantry Company. During the Fenian Raids, Hector saw action in 1866 in Detroit and it is for this service that he was awarded this medal. Hector died in Toronto in January of 1942 not long before what would have been his 102nd birthday.
This medal, awarded to members of Imperial and Canadian forces who participated in the suppression of the Fenian raids, and the first rebellion led by Louis Riel (Red River Expedition), was not issued until 1899. Participants in the Fenian Raid of 1866, the Fenian Raid of 1870 and/or the Red River Expedition had to apply for the medal and provide evidence of their service.

This medal was presented to the Archives by Mr. E. H. Shelley of Sydney, Australia in November of 1960.
