Harry W. Anderson was appointed to the Royal Commission to Investigate the Penal System of Canada in 1935. His commission papers include correspondence with lawyer W.M. Nickle, who provided evidence relating to prison conditions in general, and specifically to the Kingston Penitentiary disturbances of 1932. The evidence provided by W.M. Nickle contains details and transcripts from the trials of Timothy Buck, George Peters, Willard Millich, MacDonald, O'Brien, Kirkland, McRae and Mackenzie, who were all implicated in the Kingston Penitentiary disturbances. Related documents include the copy of Rev. Father Wilfred Kingsley's testimony of evidence given at the MacPhail Inquiry. There are also photographs of the Kingston Penitentiary building, grounds and cells, as well as a copy of the rules for prisoners and photographs of the "Paddle", which was used for discipline. This series also includes the correspondence that Anderson received from those seeking to work for the Commission, as well as the numerous letters he received applauding the goals of the Commission itself. Also included is a letter that J.C. McRuer wrote to Anderson and a copy of a CFRB Radio Broadcast that McRuer presented on 2 October 1935 titled "Penitentiaries". There are also newspaper clippings of articles on Agnes MacPhail and her efforts for prison reform, 1935.
