Speech from the Throne of the opening of Parliament in Ottawa, by the Governor General, Vere Brabazon Ponsonby, 9th Earl of Bessborough. He speaks about: Parliament; the economy; legislation in such areas as finance and the Bank of Canada; Royal Commissions; social security and the celebration of the Silver Jubilee of King George V. Excerpts include: "Honourable members of the Senate, members of the House of Commons. I welcome you at a time when our country stands upon the threshold of a new era of prosperity . . . during the last year the grip of hard times has been broken . . ." "The year 1935 will be memorable for all subjects of His Gracious Majesty, King George V. On the 6th of May we shall celebrate throughout the British Empire the 21st [sic] the 25th anniversary of His Majesty's accession to the throne. On that day all of us will wish to unite in act of thanksgiving to Almighty God . . . May God give you strength to support by your unremitting labours this great movement towards happier days." The Governor General delivers the speech in English and then someone (probably Bessborough himself) begins to read the speech in French. This is the first time that a speech from the throne was broadcast in Canada. <25mn>

1. This is a tape copy made by the Public Archives of Canada from a tape loaned to it by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (the CBC's tape copy was apparently made from two discs).~2. Discs not sent by CBC to the Library and Archives of Canada.~3. Description based on CBC cataloguing.~4. CBC cataloguing indicates that CBC Radio Archives had a tape copy under number 810669-1.
