Documentary about medical treatment to reduce the damage caused by strokes. Less than a week ago, a slim, active 45-year-old Hamilton, Ontario woman named Joan suffered a hemorrhagic stroke (a burst blood vessel in the brain) and a collapsed lung. With no obvious family history of stroke, and being routinely active, Joan doesn't fit the stereotype of a sedentary, over weight, genetically pre-disposed individual with high blood pressure and other cardio-vascular ailments. Stroke is the fourth leading cause of death in North America, affecting over 4.7 million men, women and children worldwide each year. Caused when blood flow to the brain is interrupted, stroke is on the rise, particularly among women who currently account for 60 percent of all caseloads. In fact, one in five women are affected by stroke within their lifetime. This is nearly double the number of cases for all forms of cancer. And although risk doubles every ten years after the age of 55 for both sexes, almost 30 percent of female stroke patients are under age sixty five and many, like Joan, are pre-menopausal. Although Joan faces an uncertain future (statistically she has a 20 percent chance of having another, potentially fatal, stroke within two years), she and her 23-year-old daughter remain optimistic. Since 1950, mortality rates have plummeted from almost 90 percent to less than 30 percent in the first year after a stroke. New research, earlier and improved diagnosis, more effective interventions and rehabilitation have all contributed to dramatically better survival rates and enhanced quality of life. The question remains: Will Joan's recovery be as successful? Clot Busters is a documentary that chronicles Joan's difficult six-month struggle back to health through cutting-edge therapies developed at the Ontario Centre for Stroke Research, a consortium of three of Canada's premier stroke research and treatment facilities: Sunnybrook and Women's College Health and Sciences Centre; the University of Ottawa's Health Research Institute; and Toronto's Baycrest Centre for Geriatric Care. Over the next six months, Joan will begin an extensive recovery program featuring a range of diagnostic testing, drug therapies, rehabilitation and psychological counseling. Joan's brain will be mapped on a MEG, a powerful magnetic-encephalograph scanner that produces images so accurate that doctors can actually predict psychological consequences of damage to specific brain areas. Joan will undergo physiotherapy using the latest in virtual reality 3D imaging which will help her regain motor capability by accelerating normal recovery using untapped internal motivation. She will also be monitored at the basic DNA level to determine how her brain proteins actually reconstruct and what the genetic consequences might be. Clot Busters is a powerful story of family courage in the face of crisis and one individual's determination to survive. <1h>
