In November of 1996, sixteen sailors, each aboard their own sixty foot yacht, set sail in one of the most daring races ever envisioned. The Vendée race originated in France and took the sailors around Antarctica, possibily the least hospitable place on earth. With only themselves on board, the race involved not only battling the elements, but also battling loneliness and sleep deprivation. After four vessels capsized and were in dire need of rescue, Australian planes and Navy ships were dispatched, although in some cases they were up to five days away. After one hundred and five days, the winner crossed the finish line. Only six officially finished, and a Canadian man lost his life to the hurricane force winds and torrent seas. <46mn 04s>
