COLD WAR LOVE recounts the fairytale story of Mark and Yvette McKoy- two top track athletes, whose love overcame the seemingly insurmountable obstacles in its path. Yvette was born in East Germany to a white mother and black father. Her father was forced to return to his native Mali the day Yvette and her twin sister were born. Yvette and her family gained social standing in the socialist state because of the twin's remarkable athletic ability as track runners. While attending the prestigious sports school in East Germany, Yvette competed for the German Democratic Republic all over the world. Yvette first saw Mark McKoy at a competition in Germany, where the Canadian athlete was also competing. Their love was forbidden, and so for three years only sparse communication was possible. Yvette fell under the watchful eye of the Stazi, the East German Secret Police. She was not allowed to leave the country and feared she would never see Mark again. She contemplated defection, but feared for the safety of her family. In 1989, the Berlin Wall came down and she was reunited with Mark. Three months after the fall of the wall, the fairytale had a happy ending. The couple was married, had two children, and in 1992, Mark won Olympic gold in Barcelona. <46mn, 45s>
