Interview of Zac Sinclair Phimister, Deputy Minister of Education for Ontario, about his experiences in Spain during the Spanish Civil War. He was studying at the London Institute of Education in the summer of 1938. He had been a school inspector. While there, he applied to the Quakers for a job with the Quaker unit in Spain during his vacation. The Quakers gave him a test and then sent him by truck to Spain. The trucks were under cover because of the threat of sabotage by rightists in France. He describes the work of the Quakers in Spain. They were trying to feed refugee children. This was in December 1938. The Quakers did the same sort of work on the Franco side of the line. He desribes the trip through France to [Perpinion]. Everything moved at night because of the bombing during the day. The Quakers operated out of a large house in Barcelona. He was boarded by the Quakers in a Spanish home. He was sent to work for the Loyalist side. Phimister comments on how the Quakers raised money to support their work. He was a volunteer but gave a donation to the Quakers. He had to pay his own way into Spain. He describes how the Quakers distributed food to approximately 100,000 children, and looked after young children and older orphans. Phimister also speaks about the shortage of food in Barcelona toward the end of the war, the bombing of Barcelona and the number of Spaniards who worked with the Quakers. He also comments on the feeling of defeat typical of the period of December 1938 and January 1939, when Franco was advancing. He returned to England to continue his studies.
