Interview of Reid McVicar about his experiences in the Spanish Civil War. He speaks about how he became interested in the situation in Spain, his motivation, his recruitment, the journey to Spain, travelling over the Pyrenées, the enthusiasm of the Spanish people for the men who had travelled to Spain to fight for them, travelling to Albacete, the training base, the poverty of the local people, the spirit and pride of the Canadians who were fighting in Spain, Al Cohen and other people he knew, Paul Robeson's singing for the soldiers, meetings where the purpose of the fighting and the role of the International Brigade were discussed, the Teruel campaign, the calm of the soldiers during the retreat, an inspiring speech by General Walters, a cavalry patrol, Russian tanks, his duties as a runner taking messages to different companies, his opinion of Edward Cecil Smith, Untamo Makela, the Mackenzie-Papineau Battalion, getting wounded at Gandesa, the Political Commissar in Number Two Company, party meetings, the commander of the Finnish machine gun group, the composition of the battalion, Paddy [Nolen], the work of the field hospital where doctors operated without anesthetic, hospitalization in Barcelona, the Ebro offensive, the Spanish troops, religion as a factor in the International Brigade, medical services at the front, elementary first aid, concerns about the competence of the high command, an incident in which commanders ordered men to move up a hill in broad daylight, exposing them to shell and resulting in a number of casualties, being pressured to join the party, repatriation camp, bitterness between the anarchists and the International Brigade, his affection for the Spanish people, and his feeling that the fighting in Spain was still worth it.
