Interview of Steve Nelson, an American officer with the Lincoln Battalion in the Spanish Civil War. He gives his impression of Canadians he knew, the division commander, the discipline of the Canadians, the retrieval of an abandoned machine gun at Mosquito ridge by a Canadian who felt confident he could get the gun out safely, Alex Miller, the action at Quinto, atrocities committed by the International Brigade, the execution of prisoners, General Walter, review sessions in the brigades where the men and officers would hold discussions, Luigi Longo, a Hungarian named Galo, the goal to capture Madrid, the belief that more volunteers would arrive to serve in Spain, the belief that the Loyalists would get international aid, the policy of non-intervention, the lack of military experience among some of the people, the hope that if the International Brigade held on, the better the chance that the democratic countries would come to the aid of the republic, the blacklist and McCarthyism in the United States, concerns about Communism, the reasons why men went to fight in Spain, the desire to stop Hitler, the cold war, the consciousness of modern youth, the Soviet Union, his belief that socialism can grow from American roots rather than conforming to structures in China or Russia, and the healthier outlook of the student movement.
