"Gypsum is largely employed in the manufacture of plaster [of] paris and in the building trades. There are extensive workings at Caledonia, Ontario." (1927 OMPB Catalogue) - Footage includes: exterior of the gypsum mine at Caledonia; INTER-TITLE: "So far about 60 acres have been mined there. The gypsum is found from 85 to 90 feet below the surface in horizontal veins from 6 to 10 feet in depth." Various shots of tools being repaired in the underground workshop; mules resting in underground stables; INTER-TITLE: "Accomodation is also provided for the mules, which enjoy a snack and a short rest during the noon hour." Shots of underground railway system; gypsum being drilled before blasting; preparation for blasting; mules drawing loaded cars of gypsum to the crushing and drying operations; small particles of gypsum travelling through the Pennsylvania Hammer Mill; INTER-TITLE: "The small particles of gypsum then travel through a Pennsylvania Hammer Mill equipped with 60 hammers each hitting 1200 times a minute." Shots of the gypsum passing through a screen directly to the kettles for calcination; tailings going to a Maxicon Mill where they are ground and sent on to the kettles; raw gypsum turned to plaster of paris; shots of plaster of paris being mixed with sawdust and water and then being passed into a mixer where clearing paddles carry it on to a board machine; various shots showing board travelling along to foot conveyor belt to an automatic knife which cuts boards into different lengths as required and transfers boards to trucks; INTER-TITLE: "In the trucks it goes to the kilns, which are 250 feet long and very highly insulated with gypsum." Shots of trucks heavily lined with gypsum taking boards to the kiln where they remain from twelve to thirteen hours; and the boards [which are] now ready for the stockroom are shipped to all parts of the world.

See also IDC 188763, MINING ONTARIO'S GYPSUM, which is a shorter version from the 28mm three-reeler. The 28mm version is slightly longer and uses a different font style for the inter-titles.~4. "In the spring of 1925, Treasurer, W.H. Price circulated a letter to each of the ministries of the Ontario Government requesting suggestions for films that would be of use to the various departments, to be produced by the OMPB. Thomas W. Gibson, Deputy Minister, Department of Mines replied on May 21, 1925, with suggestions that led to the production of several films - GYPSUM MINING, among them. On the subject of gypsum he wrote : "There are extensive deposits of gypsum in the valley of the Grand River. The principal seat of the industry is at Lythmore in the county of Haldimand, where the Ontario Gypsum Co. Ltd. has its mines and mills. The head office of this company is at Paris. No film has yet been made of the gypsum industry and I think it would lend itself very well for this purpose."
