Burial of Major Edward Lewin Knight, commander of the Eaton Motor Machine Gun Battery (Canadian Machine Gun Corps). Knight was killed on 26 September 1916. He was from Durham, ON. FROM CEF Burial Registers: "KILLED IN ACTION The battery was covering attacks on Zollern, Hessian and Regina trenches, near Courcelette. Major Knight and two officers with whom he was conversing were killed instantaneously by an enemy high explosive shell, at 3:40 pm on September 26, 1916, while sitting outside the Headquarters dugout, situated about 500 yards North West of Pozieres, near the Cemetery." Relevant war diary notes that he was buried in the British cemetary, Tara Hill, the next day, surrounded by men from his unit.
