This is a documentary following following the team of Operation Migration, Project Leader Joe Duff, and internationally renowned naturalist and aviator William Lishman (who was depicted in the movie FLY AWAY HOME), as they lead a flock of Whooping Cranes on an ultra-light led migration, 2500 kilometers from Wisconsin to Florida. Since 1939, when it was discovered that there were less than twenty Whooping Cranes left in the wild, it has been the focus of a concerted effort to stop it's slide into oblivion. Today, the Whooping Crane stands as one of the foremost symbols of mans attempts to right the wrongs of past human errors. Critical to the birds' survival is the establishment of a second, independent, migratory flock. For more than two decades, there have been various experiments aimed at establishing this second flock. All have failed. In the fall of 1999, the International Whooping Crane Recovery Team sanctioned Lishman, Joe Duff and Operation Migration to begin an ultra-light experiment to establish a second, migratory flock of Whoopers. Wisconsin was chosen as the northern nesting ground and the cranes would winter on the gulf coast of Florida. A successful experiment with Sandhill cranes took place in 2000, to refine protocols and to survey the route to be flown. On November 11th, 2001 after a 35 day ultra-light led migration the cranes landed at their destination.~The following spring the cranes instigated their own migration north and on April 27th, 2001 the birds returned to their nesting ground in Wisconsin. On October 17th, 2001, the first ultra-light led migration of Whooping Cranes departed from Wisconsin. Forty-seven days later, on December 5th, the team of ultra-lights, mobile homes and whooping cranes arrived at their final destination in Florida. The film explores the fragile history of the Whooping Crane as well as documents the adventure of their cross-country odyssey in an effort to establish a second flock of wild migrating whooping cranes. The birds complete the first successful ultra-light led migration to Florida. <1h>
